Always nice to see home, my family has been in the Chesterton area for over a century, I grew up there and graduated from CHS in 98. I am now serving with the 101st Airborne in Iraq. I have been in the Army for 5 years and miss my hometown. I now have a family of my own and plan on moving back to or near Chesterton. I miss it and it is nice to see very familiar pictures of home. Keep up the good work

I moved from Chesterton in 1977 when I was 13. I have great memories on the town itself. I'm surprised to Gazebo is still standing, it must be so old by now! Do you still have movies in the park? I remember the Park Program, Leonards Restaurant (is it still there? they had the best soup), Ben Franklin dime store with penny candy, saturday school an St. Pats, parades, the drive-in, the Tasty Freeze. I lived on 18th street and took baton lessons in a neighbors basement. My dad was a Police Officer (Pat Curran) and dog catcher. Would love to hear from old friends. Dawn Whitton was my neighbor and friend and came to see me in Las Vegas recently.

On May 13th 1999 on this website I wrote that I was planning on marrying Michelle Petty of Chesterton. On April 30th 2003, Michelle gave birth to our son, Brendan Donegan. Today, September 29th, Michelle is taking him to the U.S embassy in London to do the paperwork enabling him to become a U.S citizen as well as a UK citizen. He is absolutely beautiful and we are incredibly proud of him. He visited Indiana earlier this month, though Michelle's folks have now moved out of Chesterton so he only got to stay in (....sorry....) Valpo. I look forward to the day when he's old enough to visit his Mother's home town and see where his Mother and Father first dated on that side of the pond.

To people who have never been to Chesterton, Ind., you are missing out on a "WONDERFUL TOWN".
I would just like to let everyone know that this is a "WONDERFUL" town. I was born in Valpo and lived in Chesterton til I was 6yrs old, then we moved away. I haven't been back since I was 10 to 13 yrs old. I miss the home town feeling. I would like to move back there someday. It is just a town that you can feel safe in and know everyone around you and have family that only lives a hop, skip and a jump away.
I miss you Chesterton, Ind.,

Hi to Chesterton, my home town, sure has been along time.Too long ! I look @ the pictures on the website and my heart yearns to come home.I was born in Gary Indiana, 1947.@ the age of 16 I moved to California. We always enjoyed the beach. Not the state Park.I can't remember exactly where it was located. @ the beach you walk down into a snack bar.It must have been made of rock or cement or something.Gee it's been so long. It was always so cool in there.
And your sandy wet feet did'nt matter. Is it still there ? The Centenial in 1952, was big time. My mother made for us matching bonet's and dresses for the occasion. I think it is time to complete my lifes circle. Thanks, to my hometown.

I was en exchange student (Class of 82) at CHS High and lots of memories came back to me when I found this site! Sadly I've lost contact with both my host family (Ruth, Len and Jennifer Roberts) and all of friends from that time. If anybody got any information about their current whereabouts it would be greatly appreciated. It would also be great to find more about class reunions (sites) etc. My e-mail is thomas.gustafsson@chello.se

Well thats what you get when you type your surname into a search engine more information on a place you never knew existed than you could possibly ever need. Still great site if i ever make it over to the states I guess it would be rude not to visit a namesake town. Happy christas and best wishes for 2003.

I am looking for information on a few companies that my mom used to work at in the 80's. I am in hopes of finding some material on her for my scrapbook. Pictures/articles/etc. She worked for AAA Chicago Motor Club in Michigan City. She worked for Zima Signs in Burns Harbor and she also worked for CLM Realtors in Chesterton. One more place was Shilo Arabian Farms in Hobart. If you have any knowledge of these companies, addresses, others who've worked there, newspaper clippings, etc. PLEASE send me a note!! No hate e-mail, please. I grew up in Chesterton, graduated from St. Pat's in 1963, went to Chesterton High School until 1963 when my dad moved us to California. What a life. But, "back home" never, ever left my memories. My daughters were raised with so many stories and now one of the is considering moving there. So, old schoolmates, drop me a line, if it is a nice one. Being older now, I realize what a stinker I was as a kid, so, for all my classmates I offeneded, I sure am sorry, cuz the truth is I really loved you all so very much, in spite of how I acted. And, growing up with all of you kept me sane in the bad times. Good luck to all of you back home people.

Hey, Ozzie, Hit the Yellow Brick Road!
Aug. 3, 2002
By Michelle Holmes / Post-Tribune staff writer
CHESTERTON The town of Chesterton has one message for Ozzy Osbourne: This isnt the Emerald City and youre no Dorothy.
A vote by the Wizard of Oz committee made it official last week: The new icon of headbanging fatherhood and reborn scion of pop culture may do what he likes at Ozzfest, but hes officially not welcome at the Oz Fest.
It is an awkward situation admitted Duneland Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Laurie Franke-Polz on Friday afternoon.
The whole event is planned around families and family values. We didnt feel it was appropriate to bring in a rock star of that caliber. Whether the 50-something king of the headbangers and an MTV video crew really have their eyes on Chesterton
or whether the whole situation is an elaborate scam isnt exactly clear.
Weve gotten calls from supposed press agents and representatives of MTV, said Franke-Polz, but we cant verify they are who they say they are.
So, this is more than a rumor?
It is not rumor. It is a possibility.
Representatives werent available Friday afternoon to confirm or deny the reports theyve been talking with the town over the last several weeks about a video shoot.
But with the towns biggest event less than two months away Sept. 20-22 Oz Fest planners decided to take a clear stand early.
Weve requested it does not go any further, Franke-Polz said.
As much as wed love MTV coverage, wed really want it for the festival itself, not for this.
So will Ozzy crash the party for a chance to mingle with the dozens of diminutive Dorothys who descend on this small downtown each fall?
Franke-Polz acknowledges that an official response can only go so far.
I cant stop them.
While she doesnt want to be unkind or unwelcoming, the festival has built itself on a tradition that doesnt include metal mayhem.
A rock star really doesnt fit. Theres just no connection to the movie.
Especially it seems, a rock star whose greatest hits include family favorites such as War Pigs, No Rest for the Wicked and Children of the Grave.
But the public persona doesnt mean he cant behave when necessary, points out Jim Daly, general manager of the towns new Hilton Garden Inn.
Daly said hes encountered Osbourne at a previous hotel position in Illinois.
Hes a really nice guy, Daly said.
Earlier this summer, after all, Osbourne made it a point not to drop his trousers when playing for the Queens Golden Jubilee.
So what about the rumors hes already booked a set of rooms?
Is Ozzy coming to stay?
Not that Im aware of, Daly said, somewhat cryptically.
But I wouldnt mind having him here.
For now, while the town contents itself with speculation, the Oz festival committee is making plans to welcome the family of a New York firefighter killed in the terrorist attacks last September.
And the members are busy promoting the towns signature festival on the national stage.
Were being featured on the Travel Channel. Thats the kind of positive coverage we want, Franke-Polz said.
But what about the horde of media that would descend on Duneland to watch Ozzy Osbourne stagger down the Yellow Brick Road?
Theres publicity and theres publicity, Franke-Polz said.
Im hoping this whole thing just goes away.

We are from southern Il and just returned home from visiting the Indiana Dunes area. It was great! I'm sure there's a lot that we missed. We did climb the dune, although I had to have help, but, even though it was a tough job, I'm glad I made it up alive because it was a great adventure! Everyone should try it just once!!! sUCH A BEAUTIFUL PLACE!!! We met the nicest people in that area also, for that we thank you. We really had a great time and plan to come back soon. We have already told many of our family and frineds about how wonderful everyone and everything was.

As a former NOPAC employee, Chesterton holds a spot dear in my heart. Just wish we could have continued. I am trying to find pictures of Camp Indiana, also known as The Govenor's Cottage that once graced the Indiana Dunes State Park. As kids we were able to spend a week there as guests of my Uncle who was a Ranger. Just trying to locate pictures of the actual cottage (right, this place had a ballroom, so cottage may be an understatement.). Also pictures of the old hotel, or club that use to sit west of the Main Pavillion. Both are long gone. Hoping someone has some pictures that they would share with me. Great site.

What a beautiful photograph taken of the park in Chesterton Indiana. I found it to be refreshing and inviting. Soon I will be traveling to Chesterton to visit friends for the very first time, could you pass on any information about the area of things to do where to go and what to do? Like all places including my home town located in SW Florida, if we look for the positive we will certainly find it, if we look for something negative we will find that as well. I think it's best to always try and find the beauty in things.

I grew up in "Cheese Town". Second through fourth in Thomas school with Mrs. Miller as the principal (good back hand on her swats!). Spent fifth grade the opening year in Westchester Elementary School with Mr. Alt ("Hittem again. Harder! Harder!). Moved on to the Middle School trying to ovoid the wrath of Mr. Meek (He had a good right hand for swats, but his left could have used a little work). My oh my the girls wore short skirts in 1970! Spend my high school years in the "then" brand new high school. Remember......smoking across the street?...Suicide Hall?...Voodoo Night?...Coach Binary (You're sad, Powell!")...The Drug Letters that went home?...Mr. Jones that little bald ?...Being hippies in the park?...Rafter After?Chesterton was an interesting place to grow up. I visit from time to time. The town has changes so much I hardly recognize it from my childhood. All in all, I am happy to be here in Washington.

Lived there 1973-84, moved to CO with family. Dad still lives in Portage, other family still in area. Went to St. Pat's, as did sister Karen who went also to Weschester and old CHS. Looking for any photos of the old place at 622 Wabash (between the tracks and 8th and Locust on the north side), especially fall photos. Grandpa built it back in 1940 and I haven't seen it in 12 years.

Does anyone remember Claire Pearson? She lived on South Park in Chesterton in the 70's and ran a daycare out of her basement. She was known as "Ms. Claire" by the kids. I went there myself between 1972-1975. If anyone remembers her or knows what became of her, please let me know!!!

Just wanted to say, I lived in Chesterton for an extremely long year and a half. I couldn't stand the town or the teenagers in it. I'm 20 years old now, and I want to tell all of you that moving from that town was the best thing that could've happened for me. I hope any of you who read this that are parents of kids that attended Westchester Middle School, and are now 20 or 21 years of age, have learned to teach your kids about the effects of bullying their peers. It disgusted me to see how cruel and heartless they were not only to me, but to others. I'm scarred for life, thanks to you and your dear sweet little angels. Not scarred physically, mind you, but emotionally. That time in my life haunts me as much today as it did then. Kids learn by example. Who better to teach them NOT to pick on others than their own parents? That's why I am signing this guestbook. It can only end with you, the parent. Please let it, because not all of these stories end up like mine. Some end in suicide; mine almost did. Feel free to email me with any comments you have on this post, good or bad.

I moved from Chesterton 29 yrs ago..What has happened? Beautiful rural area are now filled with townhomes. Beautiful old homes that our Grandparents owned are know rundown and ugly! Chesterton, fix what made you so special! Sell your fields and land to developers to make money? Why! Erasing the past is all you are doing! I visited last year, for those of you who still hold the values of a welcoming front porch High, your right on track!, and for those who think a front porch is a storage shed, well I feel sorry for those who will not grow up in the Chesterton that I did!word of advise...dont throw away old homes to build new one, because when you do you dont just throw away a home, you throw away a part of your town. sorry for writing so much had to get it out! Purdue & jobs took me away (Class of 1972). First hit when I entered "Wiesemann, Indiana" tracing genealogy. A lot of people there still spell our name the German way.

So happy to see that Chesterton has their own website. It is great having somewhere I can retreat to that reminds me of my hometown. I was just back there about 2 weeks ago due to the death of my nephew. But being around the entire town again brought back a lot of memories. Anyone out there from the class of 1961?
